COLOUR IN PLANTING DESIGN.
I design low maintenance all year round gardens and as such I use many evergreen plants with green foliage. By using some deciduous plants I add seasonal colour in leaf, berries, bark and flower. The white stems of a silver birch or the red ones of a Tibetan cherry always look great. The spring and autumn leaves of Japanese maples are a favourite. Spindle trees have beautiful autumn berries and perennials such as Angelica add accents of vivid colour. For a purple evergreen I use Pseudopanax contrasted with Libertia. I love the gamut of colour from yellow and ochre to orange to add energy and vigour. Of course the choice in green is extensive and a favourite is the smooth canes of bamboo underplanted with serrated ferns.
