Texture and detail in contemporary garden design

CONTEMPORARY GARDEN DESIGN DETAILS.

Any outdoor space, regardless of size, is better appreciated through richness of detail. Nothing is more abundant in gardens than the contrast between textures between materials and foliage, water and stone, wood and grass. Using different material finishes provides a tactile experience which stimulates the senses - under foot, to touch and visually. I like honed natural stone contrasted with flamed stone in areas such as steps, deck edges, cladding and wall coping. Bold combinations in planting often give great impact against simple details, while sharply defined edges offer a good foil to simpler planting. The important elements of time and weather shape the textural qualities of a garden yet the inherent body of fine details is a testament to a skilful design.
